Collage Exercise

• Begin by changing to the HDF Samples directory and invoke Collage while there:

• Pull down the File menu and select Open Animation.
• A dialog window should appear listing file names in the HDF Samples directory. Select denaj+.hdf by clicking on it, and then click on the OK button.
• This will bring up a new window showing the content of the HDF file. The default format lists the HDF groups. Click on the RIG button to view raster images. There should be 60 images on that file.
• Click on the first image, tag name DFTAG_RIG, ref 1, then scroll to the end of the listing, press the Shift key on your keyboard and left-mouse click on the last image. This should select the whole lot.
• Now pull down the Transport menu and select Send Selection. There is nothing else there to select anyway. This will bring up an image window with video-player like controls. Experiment with those controls viewing the unfolding video.
• Go to the Options menu and select Show Frame Number, then go to Play Mode submenu in the same Options menu and select Continuous Bounce. Press the play button in the video controls bar and watch the video go back and forth.
• Repeat the exercise with skull.iso.Ras8.hdf. There are 40 images on that file.
• The following part of the exercise should be done in pairs. I couldn't get it going between my Sun and a machine in the Ships Cluster. I suspect that this is because TCP/IP wrappers on those machines block access to Ships Cluster machines ports from outside. But it may work in the lab. If not, try it in the Sun laboratory in Lindley Hall. It works just fine between the two Suns in my office.
  • Close all windows with the exception of the first one and pull down the Collaborate menu. Select Begin Session.
  • A small dialog window should appear with your name in it. Click the pointer on the Server Port Number field, and type in a sufficiently high number, e.g., 4701. Collage should answer with a message such as:

    Just established a connection with 
    collage server (129.79.207.193:47585)
    

    Ignore the number after the colon. It's garbage.
  • Your colleague on another machine should now invoke Collage as before.
    • Once the Collage window is up go to the Collaborate menu and select Join Session.
    • A dialog window will pop up with your name in it. You will have to type in the host name of the Collage server and the server port number. In my case:

      Host name:	129.79.207.193
      Server port number:	4701 (not 47585!)

      and press the OK button.
  • You should now see both your names in the Participants field of your main Collage steering windows.
  • One of you should now start an animation as before. If everything works as it ought to, the animation should be replicated on your colleague's display.
